Defensive Driving for Trucks

Open to DVWCT and DVPLT members at no cost. You must register through the Trust to avoid billing.

This course consists of four hours in the classroom and four hours of practical driving skills. The goal of the course is to train truck drivers in collision prevention techniques. In teaching these techniques, the course also promotes an attitude of mutual understanding, courtesy and cooperation on the road.  Topics covered include: general backing techniques, foul weather driving, crash avoidance, parking lot driving and braking techniques.

Attendees should bring a work truck to class in order to participate in the practical evaluations. Students must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid Pennsylvania Operator’s License (CDL if applicable).

Lunch will not be provided but there are several restaurants nearby.

Current Issues in Municipal Liability & Civil Rights for Public Officials & Law Enforcement

Open to Property & Liability (DVPLT) and Workers’ Comp (DVWCT) members at no cost.

Pulled from the headlines and the dockets, this class will cover the areas most likely to land an officer and their department in federal court, and what can be done to minimize the risk. Using the case law as our backdrop, we will explore issues surrounding body-worn cameras, the duty to intervene, emergency vehicle operations, and 4th Amendment jurisprudence. Meant as an overview, this class is applicable for all ranks from Patrol Officer to Chief of Police.

By understanding the relationship between beliefs, actions and results, managers can create the environment necessary to keep their people motivated and focused on results. This highly facilitative workshop utilizes 20 skills sets which help managers identify the differences between unproductive “bench-warming” behaviors and positive accountability behaviors.

Description: Operating a police department is one of the most important and costly services provided by local governments. More than ever elected and appointed officials are facing questions about increased costs and the demand for services. There is no better time than the present for local governments to evaluate how they supervise their police force. This course will provide an overview of the legal framework in which police departments work in PA and present an overview of the elements necessary for an effective police department operation. Topic overview: organization, structure and costs associated with police operations, review of effective policies and procedures, the police hiring process and the role of elected officials in this process, high risk critical tasks and review of recent cases. Attorney Christopher P. Gerber, with the law firm of Siana Law, will explain where to start, along with former Police Captain Ashley Heiberger who will review best practices in policy and operations to help you reduce the risk of liability for your municipality.

Cost: $150/PSAB members and $200/non-PSAB members. Morning refreshments and lunch are included. You must register directly with PSAB (see below).

Injury Prevention Fundamentals

Safe work practices are most important in the prevention of injuries and fatalities. Understanding how external factors can influence work practices can help us focus our attention on specific actions and behaviors that will reduce risk. This course provides an understanding of how people work (human performance) and how incidents happen. Attendees will learn how to protect themselves from workplace hazards and how to maintain focus and work safely. This course is designed for all employees, providing a solid foundation in injury prevention. Managers and supervisors looking for leadership-specific training should consider the Safety Leadership for Managers and Supervisors course instead.
