Colorectal Cancer – What is it?

Did you know that colorectal cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the United States among men and women combined? 150,000 American’s each year can be diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer is a specific type of cancer that begins in the colon or rectum. With early detection, this type of cancer has a 90% survival rate. If you are experiencing any symptoms, please speak with your provider as soon as possible. Symptoms of colorectal cancer include but are not limited to:

  • Rectal Bleeding
  • Changing bowel movements
  • Persistent abdominal discomfort
  • Unexplained weight loss

With colorectal cancer, there are certain stages and characteristics that determine how far it has spread.

Stage 0 – Where abnormal cells are found in the colon or rectum.

Stage I – The abnormal cells have grown and spread into the muscular layer of the colon or rectum.

Stage II – The abnormal cells have spread to the outer layers of the colon or rectum, but not to any lymph nodes.

Stage III – The abnormal cells have spread to nearby lymph nodes, but not to other areas of the body.

Stage IV – Carried through the blood system and spread to other parts of the body like the liver and lungs.

The first step to get ahead of colorectal cancer is getting routine screenings which include but are not limited to colonoscopy and cologuard.
