If you’re a DVPLT Member traveling for work, the short answer is: no, you do not need to purchase additional insurance from the rental car company.
DVPLT provides hired auto liability coverage for vehicles rented in the course of official duties. This coverage is typically excess over the rental company’s minimum required liability insurance. However, if the rental agreement requires primary coverage—as most do—DVPLT will provide it.
When it comes to physical damage, DVPLT also has you covered. The following are considered Covered Autos under the Trust’s Hired Auto Physical Damage Coverage:
-
- Any vehicle the Member leases, hires, or borrows for six months or less.
- Any vehicle rented by an employee or official in their own name, with the Member’s permission, while performing official duties.
Note: Vehicles rented with a driver are not covered. Also, coverage is excess unless the rental contract requires the lessee (you) to carry primary coverage.
A deductible applies—$500 for cars and light trucks, and $1,000 for all other vehicles.
If the rental agreement requires replacement cost coverage, DVPLT will honor that as well. And if the rental company charges for loss of use while the vehicle is being repaired, the Trust will reimburse up to $500 per day, with a maximum of $2,500 per accident.
Lastly, while rental companies often offer a collision damage waiver (CDW), it’s not technically insurance and may not cover all types of damage. With DVPLT’s coverage in place, purchasing the CDW is generally unnecessary.
Bottom line: As long as your rental is for official business and follows the guidelines above, you’re covered—no need to buy additional insurance from the rental company.
