Basic Chainsaw Safety

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are approximately 36,000 serious chainsaw injuries each year. Proper safety equipment and operation can greatly reduce the risk of injury when using a chainsaw. This full day workshop will review safety equipment and how to safely start and operate a chainsaw. It will also review reactive forces, directional felling, limbing and bucking, use of wedges, and storm damage and removal techniques.

Participants are required to bring a hardhat.

This event will be held rain or shine, and lunch will be provided.

Municipal Police Department Supervision and Oversight

In partnership with the Pennsylvania State Association of Boroughs, the Delaware Valley Property & Liability Trust (DVPLT) is pleased to offer up to 20 full scholarships (limit two scholarships per member entity) for the following course:

Municipal Police Department Supervision and Oversight Thursday, May 23, 2024 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Location:  Delaware Valley Trusts, 719 Dresher Road, Horsham, PA

Description:  Operating a police department is one of the most important and costly services provided by local governments. More than ever elected and appointed officials are facing questions about increased costs and the demand for services. This course will provide an overview of the legal framework in which police departments work in PA and present an overview of the elements necessary for an effective police department operation.

Topic overview: Organization, structure and costs associated with police operations; review of effective policies and procedures; the police hiring process and the role of elected officials in this process; high risk critical tasks; and review of recent cases. Attorney Christopher P. Gerber with the law firm of Siana Law will explain where to start, along with former Police Captain Ashley Heiberger who will review best practices in policy and operations to help you reduce the risk of liability for your municipality.

Cost: $150/PSAB members and $200/non-PSAB members. Lunch included. You must register directly with PSAB (see below).

How to Claim a DVPLT Scholarship:

Business Communications – Elective Course, Penn State Public Entity Leadership Certificate Program

Open to DVWCT and DVPLT members at no cost.

The morning workshop, Effective Writing, will explore methods and tools to interact and communicate successfully with others, both verbally and in writing. It will review strategies and techniques for writing letters, memos, and emails effectively. In the afternoon, the Presentation Skills workshop will introduce the tools and concepts for developing a Presentation Plan for managers. Additional topics will include strategies for dealing with presentation stress, effective use of audio-visual aids and responding to inquiry/conflict.

Lunch will be provided.

Police EVOC for SUV’s

Open to DVWCT and DVPLT members at no cost. You must register through the Trust to avoid billing.

Police emergency vehicle operations courses (EVOC) are taught by seasoned police instructors. The prime objectives of these hands-on, skill-based seminars are: (1) officer safety, (2) protection of innocents and (3) successful law enforcement.

This one (1) day course is designed for officers who routinely are assigned to drive a SUV or prisoner transport vehicles. This course will provide officers with an opportunity to apply the skills they learned during the Basic EVOC course while driving a larger vehicle. Defensive driving techniques and emergency response tactics will be demonstrated to and practiced by those attending. The course will be 1/2 day behind the wheel driving skills that includes a response course as well as a skill course that will include backing. Students must successfully complete written and practical exams to receive certification for the course.

Officers attending should report in old clothes by 8:00 a.m.

Officers attending must bring a police department owned SUV or prisoner van to drive on the driving range.

Lunch is not included however there are a few restaurants nearby.

Defensive Driving for Trucks

Open to DVWCT and DVPLT members at no cost. You must register through the Trust to avoid billing.

This course consists of four hours in the classroom and four hours of practical driving skills. The goal of the course is to train truck drivers in collision prevention techniques. In teaching these techniques, the course also promotes an attitude of mutual understanding, courtesy and cooperation on the road.  Topics covered include: general backing techniques, foul weather driving, crash avoidance, parking lot driving and braking techniques.

Attendees should bring a work truck to class in order to participate in the practical evaluations. Students must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid Pennsylvania Operator’s License (CDL if applicable).

Lunch is not included.

Customer Relations – Elective Course, Penn State Public Entity Leadership Certificate Program

Open to DVWCT and DVPLT members at no cost.

Great improvements in public perception of government can be obtained if public entities consider their residents as customers as opposed to simply “the tax base”. This program discusses customer relations within the context of municipal government activities. Leaders will be introduced to the “customer-driven” economy environment and provided with techniques for fostering a culture of customer focus within their areas of responsibility.
