The dangers, and potential for the use of deadly and non-deadly force, are manifest in dealing with mentally ill subjects.  Police remain the first responders to citizens in crisis and are often unprepared for the demands of the law, resulting in sometimes catastrophic outcomes.  This class will cover the current state of the law, and move quickly into actual cases both where officers were found liable, and where their efforts produced a better outcome.  The class will focus both on avoiding those “catastrophic outcomes” and protecting the officer and municipality from litigation.
