This session will explore the complex interplay between three major employment laws—ADA, FMLA, and Workers’ Compensation—often referred to as the “Bermuda Triangle” of HR compliance. Participants will gain a clear understanding of how these laws overlap, where they diverge, and how to manage employee leave and accommodation requests without falling into legal pitfalls.

Independent Medical Examinations (IMEs) are conducted by physicians who are not involved in the direct care of the employee. These evaluations play a critical role in clarifying diagnoses, prognoses, and an employee’s ability to return to work following a workplace injury. In this session, orthopedic specialist Dr. Richard E. Grant will discuss his role as an IME examiner. He will outline the objective medical evidence required to support his findings and recommendations—ranging from defining the accepted injury to outlining appropriate treatments and assessing physical capabilities relevant to job duties.

He served 11 years of active duty in the U.S. Air Force, including completing an orthopaedic residency at Wilford Hall Medical Center. Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) results from a sudden impact or jolt to the head that disrupts normal brain function. TBIs can range from mild concussions—with brief symptoms like dizziness or confusion—to severe injuries that cause long-term challenges with memory, cognition, movement, emotional regulation, and personality. Symptoms may appear immediately or develop gradually, making timely medical evaluation essential.
Regina Laesako, MA, CBIS, of ReMed, a Collage Rehabilitation Partner, will offer employers practical insights into understanding TBI. Her presentation will focus on recognizing symptoms, supporting recovery, and creating a more informed, empathetic workplace for employees coping with the effects of brain injury.
